I like to think of the Workbench as a place where one or many persons can put content and thoughts without inhibitions = brainstorming.
I think it could be conceived as the garage or attic where you work on stuff, keep things for later use, while the User page is more like your house where you live.
It is something that is *possible* to do, not disruptive to the functioning of the site; I wouldn't force anybody to have he or her own Workbench here on PI!
